A “TRUE volunteer in every sense”
- that’s how
Pride of Somerset Youth Awards Winner John Murphy was described by those who nominated him.

His achievements include helping with a project to restore the medieval chapel at Glastonbury Abbey, working in a charity shop on Saturdays, joining on a community organic food project, carrying out a variety of roles from stewarding to conservation with Somerset Youth Volunteering Network and many more.

His nomination said he deserves recognition for his quiet strength of character and the amount of personal time he devotes to volunteering. He never seeks reward for his efforts and does not want to shout about them.

Sandy Padgett Award

Sandy Padgett Award for dedicated skaters, Jake Mapstone and Will Willcox, of Street, were dismayed to see Glastonbury’s skate park demolished in the early hours of International Skateboarding Day in 2008.

They were given a Sandy Padgett Award for leading the charge to bring about a new, better facility by consulting young people, creating a design brief and lobbying for funding and support.

YEAR six at Milverton Primary School were the first group to be judged Winners in Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

Head teacher Richard Stead nominated them for their pioneering work in a peer mentoring project. The pupils give up their break time to help younger children sort out minor playtime disagreements. They also initiate games and are on the look out for children who are lonely or excluded to get them involved.

Mr Stead said: “Their efforts mean bullying behaviour is not given a chance to take root and is rejected by children across the school.”

The pupils have spoken at a peer mentoring conference in Bristol and were recently recognised with the Diana Award for Anti-Bullying
